Privacy Policy
Last updated: January 23, 2026
Overview
Via Romana ("the App") is a step-tracking application that helps users track their walking progress along virtual Roman roads. This privacy policy explains how the App handles user data.
The App is developed by Technoclassique ("we", "us", or "our").
Data Collection
Data Stored Locally on Your Device
The App stores the following data locally on your device:
- Step count data: Daily step counts and historical step records
- Progress data: Your progress along selected Roman roads, visited locations, and unlocked content
- Settings: Height (optional), stride length, and notification preferences
This data is stored only on your device using Android's local database. It is not transmitted to any external servers.
Data We Do Not Collect
The App does NOT:
- Collect personal identification information (name, email, phone number)
- Track your GPS location
- Transmit any data to external servers
- Use analytics or tracking services
- Display advertisements
- Share data with third parties
- Require account creation
Permissions
The App requests the following permissions:
- Activity Recognition: Required to count your steps using your device's built-in step counter sensor. This permission accesses only step count data, not GPS location.
- Notifications: Optional permission used to notify you when you reach historical locations or unlock new content. You can deny this permission and the app will function normally.
- Internet Access: Used only to load map tiles from OpenStreetMap and the Classical Atlas of the Ancient World for displaying historical maps. No user data is transmitted.
Third-Party Services
The App uses the following third-party services for map display only:
- OpenStreetMap: For modern map tiles. OpenStreetMap's privacy policy applies to map tile requests.
- Classical Atlas of the Ancient World (CAWM): For historical map overlays from the University of Iowa.
These services receive only tile coordinate requests and your device's IP address as part of standard HTTP requests. No personal or usage data from the App is transmitted.
Data Security
All user data is stored locally on your device using Android's secure local database. The App does not maintain any external databases or servers that store user information.
If you use Android's backup feature, your app preferences may be included in your device backup, which is encrypted by Google.
Children's Privacy
The App does not knowingly collect any personal information from children under 13. The App is suitable for all ages and contains only educational historical content.
Your Rights
Since all data is stored locally on your device, you have full control over your data:
- Access: View your data within the App at any time
- Delete: Uninstalling the App removes all stored data completely
- Export: Progress data can be shared using the App's share feature
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
